Summary

Secret Service agent Clint Hill reveals the stories behind the iconic images of the five tragic days surrounding President John F。 Kennedy’s assassination in this 60th anniversary edition of the New York Times bestseller。

On November 22, 1963, three shots were fired in Dallas, President John F。 Kennedy was assassinated, and the world stopped for four days。 For an entire generation, it was the end of an age of innocence。

That evening, a photo ran on the front pages of newspapers across the world, showing a Secret Service agent jumping on the back of the presidential limousine in a desperate attempt to protect the President and Mrs。 Kennedy。 That agent was Clint Hill。

Now Hill commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of the tragedy with this stunning book containing more than 150 photos, each accompanied by his incomparable insider account of those terrible days。 A story that has taken Hill half a century to tell, this is a “riveting, stunning narrative” ( Herald & Review , Illinois) of personal and historical scope。 Besides the unbearable grief of a nation and the monumental consequences of the event, the death of JFK was a personal blow to a man sworn to protect the first family, and who knew, from the moment the shots rang out in Dallas, that nothing would ever be the same。

So moving and intriguing!!I loved getting an inside look into a few days of The Kennedy's life as President and First Lady。 Told through the voice of Mrs。 Kennedy's Secret Service agent, this book gave me a "fly on the wall" perspective we don't get to often see。 The pictures are 🔥Emotionally moving as you can empathize with Mrs。 Kennedy losing her husband and her beloved President as well as how the Agents felt so much guilt at not being able to protect The President as they are assigned to do。 So moving and intriguing!!I loved getting an inside look into a few days of The Kennedy's life as President and First Lady。 Told through the voice of Mrs。 Kennedy's Secret Service agent, this book gave me a "fly on the wall" perspective we don't get to often see。 The pictures are 🔥Emotionally moving as you can empathize with Mrs。 Kennedy losing her husband and her beloved President as well as how the Agents felt so much guilt at not being able to protect The President as they are assigned to do。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

Oh yes yes yes yes yes yes, one thing about me is I love to see new photographs/experiences/POVs about the same event。 This was SO GOOD。 Observations: (1) Jackie’s handwriting is so masculine。 (2) most of the other books I’ve read about this are more about LHO or JFKs legacy or from the POV of the press/how the day unrolled around the world, so this first person account was very unique ESPECIALLY because he was literally glued to Jackie for 3 days after it happened…。and no one else can give you Oh yes yes yes yes yes yes, one thing about me is I love to see new photographs/experiences/POVs about the same event。 This was SO GOOD。 Observations: (1) Jackie’s handwriting is so masculine。 (2) most of the other books I’ve read about this are more about LHO or JFKs legacy or from the POV of the press/how the day unrolled around the world, so this first person account was very unique ESPECIALLY because he was literally glued to Jackie for 3 days after it happened…。and no one else can give you that story except Jackie or Bobby。(3) he spent a lot of the book talking about how he was the only one who could have prevented the tragedy/taken the bullet instead of JFK, but don’t you think that’s why LHO chose that moment to shoot? If you’re trying to kill the president you don’t wanna hit a SS agent, you wait until he’s out in the open。 So maybe it could have been prevented between the first and third shots, but nobody can run faster than a bullet and there wasn’t enough time between for anyone (trained as SS or not) to react。 (4) THE EPILOGUE, he literally explicitly condemns any/all conspiracy theories based on his own experience and some photos。 That was the craziest part for me。 Of course he’s gonna take the blame(also because the head of JFKs SS WASNT EVEN IN TEXAS) butttttttttt fact vs opinion…and it was so explicitly stated…。idkkkk! 。。。more

The man who never changed his story。Last year I enjoyed Clint Hill's book ("Mrs Kennedy and Me") which covers his four years protecting the wife of President John F Kennedy during the year of Kennedy's presidential campaign and the three years of his administration。 In that book he touches briefly on the events in Dallas, in which he played a major role。This book appeared sixty years after Kennedy's shocking death and some years after the death of Mrs Kennedy。 After all the books and investigati The man who never changed his story。Last year I enjoyed Clint Hill's book ("Mrs Kennedy and Me") which covers his four years protecting the wife of President John F Kennedy during the year of Kennedy's presidential campaign and the three years of his administration。 In that book he touches briefly on the events in Dallas, in which he played a major role。This book appeared sixty years after Kennedy's shocking death and some years after the death of Mrs Kennedy。 After all the books and investigations and wild conspiracy theories is there a need for yet another book about the assassination? I think so because Clint Hill was as close to the event as anyone other than the Kennedys themselves。 He was trained to observe as well as to react。 His Secret Service experience taught him to see exactly what was happening, not what he EXPECTED to happen。 As a great admirer of both Kennedys, he was emotionally involved, but his training 0verrode his emotions。Most of all, he's the man who has never changed his story。 As others (even the agent he worked with protecting Mrs Kennedy) have created new narratives which conflict with their original statements, Hill has calmly stuck to his。 There were three shots and three injuries。 There were no sounds or movement from any direction except that of Lee Oswald。 And no one found an extra bullet and "forgot" about it for seventy years。Hill's second wife is a professional writer and a competent one。 I disagree with her decision to tell the story in present tense because I found it confusing。 I understand that she was trying to create a sense of immediacy and perhaps it works for other readers。To me, the value of Hill's account is that he came to know the Kennedys in a way that servants MUST know the people they serve。 Although luke-warm about politics, he was moved by the election of a man of his own generation。 The torch had indeed been passed to the WWII generation and the differences between Kennedy and his predecessor were striking。In particular, Kennedy's attractive, stylish young wife and two cute children were focuses of both national and international obsession。 Great for John Kennedy's political ambitions; not so great for the Secret Service agents assigned to protect the family。 There was a constant push-pull between Kennedy's drive to be reelected and his wife's need for a private life for herself and her children and the author shows that conflict clearly。 Hill believes that John Kennedy loved his wife (in spite of his repeated infidelities) but also that he saw her as a political asset。 Sometimes she was the obedient politician's wife, but not always。People close to the couple claim that they renewed their relationship in the wake of the death of their infant son and that's believable。 Some men do eventually grow up and John Kennedy wasn't stupid or insensitive。 Hill believes that the couple's new closeness was the reason for Mrs Kennedy making the unusual decision to accompany her husband to Texas, which was the ultimate irony。 Unlike many people who've written about the assassination, Hill was THERE。 Not in a press car following far behind the Presidential car, but close enough to climb onto the back of the President's car after the shots were fired。 He was the one who persuaded Mrs Kennedy to let go of her husband's body for futile emergency treatment。 He was the one who called Bobby Kennedy and told him that his brother was dead。Hill is also in a position to give the details of the Secret Service protection and to point out that its seriousness and professionalism was in stark contrast to the chaotic decisions made by Kennedy's political handlers。 Although a great admirer of John Kennedy, he makes it plain that the president's ego and raging political ambition endangered him and his wife。 We think of the Kennedy assassination as shocking and totally unexpected, but there had been other assassinations and attempted assassinations。 The Secret Service certainly anticipated the possibility and acted on it。 As Hill says, "Politics and protection are constantly at war。" That day in Dallas, politics won。It you're old enough to remember the times, you'll enjoy the pictures and the now-strange clothes and hairstyles。 Only Mrs Kennedy herself never looks out-dated。 She was shrewd enough to stick to classic styles and it worked。 Behind her looks, there was an excellent brain。 She may have hated politics, but she was proud of her husband and determined to cement his legacy in American culture。 The stunning funeral she planned and bulldozed through left an impression that will never be erased and set a high bar for future First Ladies。 In the emotionalism typical of modern America, she was a queen-consort and then the ultimate widow-goddess。 A few years later, she remarried and was excoriated by the same people who once worshiped her。 A goddess is not allowed to step down from her pedestal。I find Hill's unqualified admiration of the Kennedys embarrassing, but understandable for a 31-year-old mid-westerner from modest beginnings。 More sophisticated men than he fell victim to the Kennedys' potent charm。 Indeed, it was a rare person who could resist them。 There will continue to be new "versions" of an event that still captivates the American imagination。 Me, I'll stick with Clint Hill's story。 He was there and his reporting of what happened is believable and unvarying。 Conspiracy theories will always be popular, but sometimes the simplest explanation is the true one。 。。。more

I read this book and even though it is similar in story to his other Kennedy experience books it was good and gave a few more insights

I read this one because the author has my initials (for my reading challenge) and I never would’ve read it otherwise but it was actually really interesting。 it’s fairly cut and dry and details the days before and after jfk’s assassination。 despite it’s fairly matter-of-fact approach, it tugged at my heartstrings anyway :,(

Documents the movements of the Kennedy assassination from the eyes of the secret service agent tasked with protecting the first lady。 The collection of photos is worth the read。 This one is just the facts, until the epilogue, when Clint Hill briefly reiterates his belief (based on him being there) that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman。

Photographs and personal narrative carry this “you are there” book through the days leading up to—and following—The JFK Assassination on 22/11/1963。 It is Agent Clint Hill’s own story of the events and the results of 3 shots fired in Dealy Plaza that day, and how he became an eyewitness to and very active participant in an event that changed the course of world history 。

Clint Hill is the Secret Service agent seen climbing onto the back of the President's vehicle in the photographs taken after the shots rang out on that tragic day in Dallas。 I don't know if it's the Covid or my staunch Massachusetts/Irish Catholic loyalty but I cried twice while reading this book。 Clint Hill is the Secret Service agent seen climbing onto the back of the President's vehicle in the photographs taken after the shots rang out on that tragic day in Dallas。 I don't know if it's the Covid or my staunch Massachusetts/Irish Catholic loyalty but I cried twice while reading this book。 。。。more

Primary source material of what transpired that November day。 Clint Hill’s recollections in his books, especially those of the Kennedy presidency and family, are fascinating treasures of US History。

There are events in history we are all taught and all know。 But at some point if we didn't actually live thru it, they become something like that chair in the corner of the living room。 It's just a part of life that doesn't have a lot of meaning till we need to move it for one reason or another。 Clint Hill did a great job of presenting what those days were like from moment to moment as he was right there being the Secret Service Agent for Mrs Kennedy。 There was little opion just facts。 But more There are events in history we are all taught and all know。 But at some point if we didn't actually live thru it, they become something like that chair in the corner of the living room。 It's just a part of life that doesn't have a lot of meaning till we need to move it for one reason or another。 Clint Hill did a great job of presenting what those days were like from moment to moment as he was right there being the Secret Service Agent for Mrs Kennedy。 There was little opion just facts。 But more importantly he showed us the aftermath。 The book does not end with the shots fired but rather the JKF Jr's 3rd birthday。 Sadly the same day his dad was laid to rest in Arlington。 Life goes on but it leaves and indelible mark。 。。。more

My initial reaction was only 2 stars because I don’t think I learned anything。 But I will up it to 3。 My fault that I’ve already read stuff about the JFK assassination。 But not my fault that he seemed to make it seem almost boring。

Clint Hill tells a great story and Lisa McCubbin writes it beautifully - a TERRIFIC team! I loved this book - a fast read - a memorable story。 I was just a kid when Kennedy was assassinated and I've read many versions of what may have actually happened。 Clint offers a compelling perspective supporting the "one shooter" theory。 Written in 2013, there may be new evidence that doesn't support that theory anymore, or not。 JFK's nephew, RFK, Jr seems to think our own CIA had a hand in this。 President Clint Hill tells a great story and Lisa McCubbin writes it beautifully - a TERRIFIC team! Who knows? Heartbreaking recounting of the days before and after the assassination of JFK。 I was just a child at the time but remember the reaction of the adults around me and knew it was a really sad event。 This telling is from the Secret Service agent assigned to Jackie。 I did go down the rabbit hole and watched the funeral and viewed lots of pictures and articles about it afterward。 Not profound writing but very interesting and sad。

I actually enjoy reading non-fiction so when i heard the secret service agent that jumped in the car when shots were fired the day John F。 Kennedy died wrote his story of what happened that day, I knew i had to read it。 I cant even begin to describe how well the imagery was portrayed that brought such strong emotion to the reader。 If you enjoy history as much as I do this is the perfect read。 I dont usually get emotional with non-fiction books but this piece broke me into pieces。 I did not exist I actually enjoy reading non-fiction so when i heard the secret service agent that jumped in the car when shots were fired the day John F。 Kennedy died wrote his story of what happened that day, I knew i had to read it。 I cant even begin to describe how well the imagery was portrayed that brought such strong emotion to the reader。 If you enjoy history as much as I do this is the perfect read。 I dont usually get emotional with non-fiction books but this piece broke me into pieces。 I did not exist on November 22, 1963 but this books puts you in Clint Hill’s point of view in those 5 days of November and to sum it up it is extremely heartbreaking and devastating。 。。。more

Clint Hill provides an amazing, firsthand account of his experiences in the thick of one of the nation’s most devastating tragedies, the death of President John F。 Kennedy。 The telling of the final days of Kennedy’s life, and through his burial, will pull at your heartstrings, while providing incredible details that can only be told in the way Clint Hill does—admirably。
